Spring Day

Spring Day /Arbor Day

WPS

After a brutal winter Whetstone Primary School was ecstatic to shout out “HELLO SPRING!!!”, on the first of September.

We celebrated Spring Day as well as Arbor Week which ran from 01/09/21 till 03/09/21 and 06/09/21 till 09/09/21. A full week of interesting and informative activities ensured that learners and teachers were fully engaged in creating awareness of the importance of trees and plants.

Learners made Spring Hats, posters and collages from recycled material to show their individual appreciation of fauna and flora. We showcased their talent on our Arbor Week display wall.
Learners were entertained with informative videos throughout the week reiterating the importance of looking after our trees and plants. Interesting speeches and talks on the history of Arbor Week, deforestation, recycling and the tree of the year were delivered to educate learners about why we should value trees and plants.

Our friends at Ethekwini Parks and Gardens will be donating trees and plants that will help alleviate soil erosion in the different areas of our school. We are so grateful for their help to beautify our school.

The educators of Whetstone Primary were fully involved by creating and sustaining their own gardens. 5 areas of our school gardens were designated to 2 grades each and those teachers were challenged to revamp it and add to the beauty of our school. Amongst the gardens that have been upgraded is a vegetable garden which is currently flourishing with vegetables and herbs.

Our aim this year was to bring colour back into our lives at school considering the challenging times we are facing. Our children are learning how to maintain and sustain their grade gardens by watching their teachers.

The principal, staff and learners wish to congratulate the Grade R & 1 teachers on their outstanding efforts in creating and sustaining their blossoming garden. They are the winners of our GARDEN COMPETITION 2021. It has brought us such joy watching these areas come to life. Your enthusiasm is infectious and we thank you for your effort.
